Remembering Julie Chen

See you soon Julie!!
Jim Frederick - Friend from Wycliffe in Davao

I only knew her for 24 days after arriving here in the Philippines to teach but she has made a great impact on my life. Because I had just left my daughter Jenny about 4 weeks earlier, Julie quickly became my adopted daughter. We were just beginning to have some wonderful father/daughter talks. We talked often between and after classes and it was always so refreshing and fun to talk to her.

Julie was a great encourager. I was really struggling with being a new teacher, and especially with Pre-Calculus as it had been 40 years since I took Calculus! But she kept telling me, "God and I are so proud of you!" When she was having her dinner party on her last Saturday with us, she wrote the following note to invite me. "Dear Jim, Just a reminder: dinner @ the Christensen's will be served at 6pm this Saturday. Please wear shoes!=) Love, Julie P.S. God and I are very proud of you. You have a beautiful, strong, amazing testimony Jim. I've only cried over one other in my entire Christian journey. You are an amazing encouragement to me and a model of true manly humility and gentleness. This year will be fun tackling bright ugly cabinets with decorations and pre-calc. He is with you! Ha! J" I will cherish that note.

What will I miss about Julie? Everything! Her big dark eyes filled with excitement and wonder, her infectious laugh, her love of bringing fun to everyone and causing some mischief, her little feet with toes always moving, her fun personality, her desire to please God, her love of life and everyone she came into contact with, the way she would always find positive things to say about others. It was so wonderful to go to her classroom during morning break and see her sitting at her computer with her feet up in the chair. I was always greeted by a big smile which made my heart feel so good. Her leaving has left a huge void in my life. But I know she was ready to meet her Lord and I'm so happy she is now eternally receiving from her Heavenly Father. See you soon Julie!!!
