Remembering Julie Chen

A life full of laughter and love
Jocelyn Chow - Friend and UCSD Roommate

I remember the first time I met Julie, we were both new girls to the school in 8th grade. She had long black straight hair, wearing a big tshirt and wearing the brightest red lipstick. I thought she was one hardcore girl, so you didn't want to mess with her! =) Well, after getting to know her back in those junior high days and through the high school years, and on through our college years and into our adult years...Julie has always been the same person inside. Always caring and kind-hearted with a genuine spirit. I remember when she first became a Christian, it was AMAZING! She was so fired-up about God and so full of excitement that in high school, her enthusiasm made me excited about the Lord and serving Him.

True to her heart and her convictions, she was a true testament of what it really means to be a servant of God. From the first day that I've met her, it's been amazing to see the work of the Lord in Julie. She has always inspired, encouraged, and prayed for others besides herself. As roommates she never judged me for who I was at the time or my actions but rather she was open-minded and saw every situation with a sense of light-heartedness. She was like my "mother hen" when we lived together. Always encouraging me to come back to church with her and to experience the same joy she had in serving and worshipping God. I remember the several times I would show up at church and when she saw that I was there, she would have the biggest smile as if she was a proud mother saying, "Yes! She came!" hahaha! It's like she never gave up hope on her two roommies she was living with.

Julie truly has lived her life-long dream of serving God. It was amazing when she told me that she had decided to go to the Philippines. I remember back when we both first moved to UCSD as roommates, she came home one day and said to me, "Joc, I have this crazy idea of what I want to do in the future. I want to open up an orphanage in China". My jaw just dropped when she told me that because all I could think of was "WOW!" Her idea portrayed such a kind, selfless, and caring heart that it amazed me. And here we are, four years later, she fulfilled her dream of working overseas with children. It's just amazing!

Julie, the last time we met we sat for hours talking and laughing about life, boys, your new adventure that you were going to embark on. I'm gonna miss those times. You and I always had similar and but also different perspectives which always made our conversations so much fun! I'll always remember your laughter and your sarcasm. You always made me laugh! I miss you but I know we'll meet again. You have truly left a legacy, Jules!
